The bpk photo archive

The bpk-Bildarchiv

With over 12 million photographs, the bpk-Bildarchiv owns one of the most significant historical photo collections, in which there are more than 150 photographic estates of well-known press photographers. The archive focusses on historical and political topics from antiquity to the 1990s, global geography, the topography of Berlin, portraits of important people, science and technology, everyday life, and art and culture. 

The bpk-Bildarchiv aims to preserve the historical legacy of analogue photography, make its content accessible, and digitally available when possible. All original photos are kept in the repository of the Staatsbibliothek in Berlin-Friedrichshagen and can be accessed for academic research upon request. 

The founding of Bildarchiv Preußischer Kulturbesitz (bpk)

Bildarchiv Preußischer Kulturbesitz (bpk) was founded in 1966 with the acquisition of the historical Handke archive by the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, an institution belonging to the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz.

The collection of the Handke archive consists of around 1 million images. The archive concentrated on historical images from the early stages of photography up to 1920, a collection of portrait photography, a collection of approx. 800 original engravings, historical newspapers and magazines, and large-scale illustrations from the 16th century to the present. 

The executive board of the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz continued to manage the Handke archive as an agency and decided that the bpk-Bildarchiv was to cover all its expenses with the revenues gained by marketing its images.

The income was to cover operating, preservation, and development costs as well as the expansion of the archive. 

Over the years certain publishing archives, collections, and many images by well-known photographers were either acquired or donated so that the bpk-Bildarchiv comprises more than 12 million images today.

Der umfangreiche Bestand des bpk-Bildarchivs umfasst Fotografien von den 1840er Jahren bis in die 1990er Jahre. Zu den zahlreichen Sondersammlungen gehören frühe Fotografien (z.B. Daguerreotypien, Ambrotypien und Talbotypien), Stereobilder, Albumin-Fotos, Fotochrome, Fotoalben, Glasplatten, Originalabzüge und -negative.

Photographic collections

The extensive collection of the bpk-Bildarchiv consists of photographs from the 1840s to the 1990s. It has numerous special collections, such as early photography (e.g., daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, and calotypes), stereo images, albumen prints, photochromes, photo albums, glass plates, and original prints and negatives.

About 80 percent of the collection is unique photo material from photographic estates of the early years of photography. Here is an overview of the photographic collections.

    • Daguerreotypes from 1845, e.g. by Gustav Oehme (1848) and Bertha Wehnert-Beckmann (1862)
    • Calotypes from 1841 (negatives and positives), e.g. by David Octavius Hill
    • Travel photography and photojournalism from 1870 (original prints), e.g. by Abdullah Frères (Constantinople, Cairo), the Alinari brothers (Italy), Antonio Beato, Jean Pascal Sebah (Egypt, Africa), the Zangaki brothers (Israel, Egypt)
    • Cartes de visite and stereo photography by numerous court photographers from different cities
    • Original prints (albumen prints, gum bichromates, photochromes), e.g. by Atelier Bieber, Nicola Perscheid, Hermann Rückwardt, and Friedrich Albert Schwartz
    • Photo albums (Cartes de visite and cabinet photos, albums of the First World War)

The photographic estate project

Website

In celebration of the 85th birthday of the photographer Abisag Tüllmann (1935–1996), the new Tüllmann website was launched: www.bpk-archive.de/tuellmann. This online presentation concludes the extensive project. With the financial support of the Abisag Tüllmann Stiftung, the photographic estate of press photographer Tüllmann in the bpk-Bildarchiv of the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz was made accessible and digitalised in part between 2016 and 2020.

In total approx. 10,000 digital images are available online. The website offers an overview of Tüllmann’s photojournalistic work by including her life, work, and photographic estate. In addition to biographical information, a bibliography, and a list of exhibitions, special dossiers have been provided, which help access Tüllmann’s work.

Mit der Website www.bpk-archive.de/tuellmann ist eine virtuelle Präsentation entstanden, die das Werk in seiner Vielfalt bekannter machen möchte, alle Interessierten zur weiteren Auseinandersetzung mit der fotografischen Arbeit Abisag Tüllmanns einlädt und das Werk für die Forschung öffnet.


Abisag Tüllmann (1935-1996)

Reportage and theater photographer (bpk / Abisag Tüllmann)

Abisag Tüllmann is regarded as one of the most important German photographers of the 20th century. Her extensive work covers over four decades of political activity, everyday life, and cultural life. As a freelance photojournalist she worked for over 100 newspapers and magazines, such as Spiegel, Die Zeit, FAZ and Frankfurter Rundschau from 1958 until her death. She focussed her attention on the socio-political and cultural events of her time and was particularly interested in the conditions of social coexistence and socially marginalised groups. In the 1970s, Tüllmann closely observed and documented in photographs the international freedom movements and the subsequent political and social changes in Algeria, Rhodesia (present Zimbabwe), and in South Africa. She frequently travelled to Israel as a critical observer and documenter in the 1980s.

Work

The Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz acquired all rights to the photojournalism and portrait photography in the Tüllmann archive for the bpk-Bildarchiv. This archive has a vast collection of diverse content. It comprises over 56,000 original prints, over 8,500 negative films, around 25,000 colour slides, and additional collection material, which was examined during the extensive project and partly digitalised.

The bpk-Bildarchiv has a historical photograph archive with over 12 million images, offering an inexhaustible pool of historical images, which may be published.

The bpk-Bildagentur

Ever since the bpk-Bildarchiv was founded in 1966, it has been operating as an agency and central media service provider of the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz. The bpk-Bildagentur represents all institutions of the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz when dealing with image requests from commercial users. 



„Bildportal der Kultureinrichtungen“

For over 20 years the bpk-Bildagentur has represented numerous other cultural institutions besides the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz when granting image usage rights. The ‘Bildportal der Kultureinrichtungen’ was created in cooperation with over 200 distinguished museums, libraries, and archives in Germany and abroad, and offers professional users convenient and quick access to high-quality digitalised images. The images may also be used for commercial purposes in exchange for a fee. The portal was developed as part of a project from 2017 to 2020 and was financed by Die Bundesbeauftragte für Kultur und Medien (the federal commissioner for media and culture).

Images that are in the public domain or rightfully owned by the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz, which do not infringe third-party rights, can be downloaded free of charge in the online databases of the individual institutions in the available resolutions.
